OVERVIEW

The Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s mission is to fairly and impartially enforce the rule of law and pursue justice on behalf of the citizens of Jefferson County.  It is the responsibility of the State’s Attorney to commence and prosecute violations of the criminal law, to present cases to the Grand Jury, to prosecute juvenile matters pursuant to the Juvenile Abuse and Neglect Act, and to serve as legal counsel for the County Board and other members of the County government.

The Jefferson County State’s Attorney supervises a staff of 5 full-time Assistant State’s Attorneys, 1 full-time Victim/Witness Coordinator, and 4 other support personnel.  The office annually files approximately 400 felony cases, 200 misdemeanor cases, 100 juvenile cases and 2000 traffic cases.  The office also provides services to victims and witnesses, helping to guide them through the legal system.

State’s Attorney Featherstun and his staff welcome the opportunity to assist the citizens of Jefferson County.  If you have been a victim of a crime, you must first report the offense to the police.    You should contact the law enforcement agency in the location where the offense occurred, either the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department (618.244.8004), the Mt. Vernon Police Department (618.242.2727), or the Ina Police Department (618.437.5305).
